This week’s artifact is a ladle used by the Taylor and Bate brewmaster to check beer clarity. Taylor and Bate Brewery operated in St. Catharines from 1834 to 1935 and was, for a time, one of the largest breweries in Canada.

  1. I live at 116 Rockwood Avenue and a couple of years ago when I was helping my neighbour to install a fence we found a Railroad Rail in the ground, the profile is much larger than a modern rail and I can only assume that it was for a Crane or some other large piece of equipment ? Is this evidence of manufacturing in this area ?

    1. Hi Shane. Before residential development, your neighbourhood was agricultural. However, due to your proximity to the Welland Canal it is possible the rail is leftover from one of the temporary lines used to move earth being dug from the trench. Historically, leftover rails were sometimes used as foundation support beams in house construction, so it is also possible that a farmer salvaged the rail for this purpose but ended up abandoning it. Neat find!
