An article on Sportsnet.ca examines the often overlooked history of the St. Catharines Orioles, one of the first hockey teams made up of all black players. The photograph above (from the St. Catharines Standard Collection), taken in 1937, shows the team outside of the BME Church on Geneva Street. The players were all members of the Church in St. Catharines, even the pastor was a member of the team!
